For the past 6 years we have heard Screech Owls near and on our property and would see some young ones travel through at dusk. Having seen the owl boxes in the Warring Township newsletter, we bought one. Our Screech Owl box is located in our back yard in Doylestown. We installed it in December, 2016, and had a pair of owls in the Spring of 2017. They were one red and one grey phase. We believe they had three owlets, one red and two grey. One of them stayed until mid-June. We only had a motion sensing trail camera and a camcorder then. Late fall, 2017, we installed four small night-vision cameras in the box in the upper corners. Two face the floor from the front corners and two face the entrance hole from the rear corners. One also has a microphone connected. In addition, we installed a few cameras outside of the box to view the owls in flight, entering and leaving the box as well as perching in the surrounding trees. Their eyes shine nicely from cameras' IR illumination. All of the cameras are connected to a security DVR system that shows multiple views on our HD TV and allows video recording with motion detection as well as on mobile phones and tablets. Through this winter, 2018, the owl pair (we believe the same pair) frequented the box briefly many nights. The mother, red-phase, stayed longer as time approached late March. A few squirrels tried to move in to the box but we were determined to evict them and added plastic deterrents around the box. The mother owl laid an egg on, March 25, March 28, March 30 and April 1. She incubated the eggs most of the time but did leave occasionally each night for short durations. Her mate brought her a variety of food. She would turn the eggs multiple times each day and also sit in the hole to view the outside. A week later a squirrel entered the box while mom was on the eggs. A very brief, intense fight occurred with the squirrel fleeing. Unfortunately, one egg was damaged. A second egg looked damaged as well but it was only a bit of fur stuck to the egg shell and not a hole. Two of the three eggs hatched about 5 hours apart on April 26 and the third hatched on April 28. Dad continued to bring food to the box and mom also went out briefly returning with prey to feed the young. At times mom and dad were seen meeting in a tree to share food. The owlets' eyes began to open 7-10 days after hatching. They grew quickly becoming more steady on their feet and always looking for food. They began grooming and exercised their wings. Their markings developed somewhat as well. By the third week at least two were able to climb/jump to the hole and see the outside world. They even use their beaks to help pull themselves up. Mom spent a lot more time out of the box and the fourth week she even spent some daytimes outside, although always close by. From the daylight views we didn't see any red-phase owlets and the three look similar in the black and white images so we assume they are all grey. Late Saturday evening, April 26, we saw the box was empty. Review of the video revealed that they left with very short flights that evening at about 8:40, 9:35 and 9:50pm. Mom and dad fed them in the nearby trees and checked the box that night and the next night to be sure no one remained. We will be improving the squirrel-proofing and improving the cameras as we await next year's show.
