All bat houses should be mounted at least 12 feet above ground, and 15 to 20 feet is better. Bat houses should not be lit by bright lights. Bluebirds prefer open areas such as suburban lawns, fields, pastures, etc. These areas provide the perfect habitat for bluebirds and their favorite food, insects. Bluebirds start looking for nesting sites as early as late February, so boxes should be in place by then. Mount boxes five feet above the ground. The Eastern Screech Owl is the smallest native owl in our area. Three color phases are common: reddish, grey, and brown. A nocturnal hunter, its main diet consists of insects and rodents, making them an excellent neighbor. Nesting extends from March into the summer. Four to six eggs are laid and incubation lasts about 26 days. Newly hatched screech owls are white and fluffy with the presence of two large eyes. Your box should be hung on a tree, building, or pole about 15 feet high. Place within the edge of your trees close to the open yard. You can place a small amount of wood shavings or pine straw in the bottom of the box. DO NOT USE CEDAR SHAVINGS OR SAWDUST. If starlings or sparrows begin to use the box, remove them. We have rain barrels that hold 55 gallons of water and they cost $20.00 each. In order to install the rain barrel you will need to install a diverter. The diverter is an additional $20.
